Planning to review progress

How often you review progress is for you to determine. Give this some thought at the start of your course or workshop, and you will be able to identify one or more points along the way that seem suitable. For example, the following are likely to be sensible options but some individuals will benefit from more frequent review:

Type of learning opportunity Progress review strategy
Accredited course. As each unit of work is completed and then overall, at the end of the course.
Long, non-accredited course. At the end of every half-term and then overall, at the end of the course.
On-going workshop. Every six weeks, from start date of each learner.
One day workshop. Only at end of day.

A private process or a public one?

Decide whether reviewing progress is going to be a group activity or something that you do on a one-to-one basis. The chances are that if the group has a group learning plan, you are going to want to discuss progress together. If learners have individual plans you will want to discuss each one on a one-to-basis. But there may be exceptions to this. Getting it right for learners all depends upon:

  • the purpose of the group
  • the nature of the learners
  • the type of subject or discipline; and
  • the time you have available.

It's up to you to work out what is good practice in the circumstances. There is some guidance about how to go about the process in the attached downloadable document. Subject Learning Coaches can adapt and use this as a handout to work through with colleagues.
