Risk assessment - video 1
Video transcript
Jo:
The health and safety of the classes is absolutely vital. Not only are we doing a martial art, but just the physical surroundings of the room are really, really important. So before we do any form of exercise the most important thing is to make sure, one, we can get out in case of an emergency, and make sure the students aren't going to hurt their feet on the floor. Because we are in bare feet, that creates another factor that maybe isn't important in other health and fitness exercises. To get one of the senior coaches who would already be au fait with how we would do that, just to check things like fire exits, make sure the students have checked the floor, one, because its easier to do it en masse, than it is for someone to do on their own.
Can you just do me a health and safety check please? Guys, can we form a line please, doesn't matter about grade, any grade will do we just want to check the floor. I just want you to pace forward, checking the floor, preferably not with your feet, but with your eyes and your hands, making sure you can't find any bits that are going to cut your feet.
It just means then that we know we are starting from a safe environment rather than something that is potentially going to create another hazard.
Mark, are you happy with fire exits?
Mark:
Yes.
Jo:
Fantastic.
Voice over:
How do you risk assess your learning environment? Could you be doing this more systematically or more effectively?
Carrying out a risk assessment of the environment before a karate session.
