Tree of learning

Video transcript

Voiceover:

This session is about using the tree of learning as a progress tool.

Learner:

… sent a text, emails, got some email back, I got some photos off my daughter-in-law and I entered them down onto the computer and I've done bits of things that I haven't done before. I did an advert for our house, I put our name and address, a nice house beside, I made it sound a lot better than what it were actually.

Learner:

At my age I'm not going to be mobile forever and getting all my food from supermarkets and getting, you know, if I want to purchase anything I always look for a price on Ebay, see if there's anything on Ebay will give me an idea of what's available.

Tutor:

Switch on the computer you do that, create a new document yeah, insert graphics that you've assimilated.

Learner:

I've created a business letter heading and my address, I think it's a bit the same, isn't it…

Voiceover:

The learners move onto their computers dragging text boxes indicating the IT skills that they've acquired onto the tree of learning.

Tutor:

The tree of learning is another progress tool. It monitors the progress they've made and so again it's physical for them, they can actually see what they're actually doing on the course.

Learner:

I am able to order food from any supermarket and send emails to my daughters who are the other side of England.

Learner:

I felt inferior to my grandchildren and I thought if I learn a little bit then I can keep up with them a little bit better.

Learner:

It's been useful to do this tree of learning to appreciate how much you've covered on the course.

Learner:

Before I came on this course I was a bit frightened of computers, even touching one, but it's made me feel really confident and I've really enjoyed it, yeah.

Learner:

When I started I didn't think that I could do the things that I can do now. It's just brilliant, fantastic.

Tutor:

In about week or 8 week 9, if I can manage to fit it in, I would have a couple blank leaves and they can actually type in — perhaps I wanted more like say scanning of pictures or more calendars because we try and get the learners to do something which is appropriate to home, not just in college and so it's just to give them the opportunity as well to feed back to me as well as me feed back to them.

The tree of learning — it helps the learners, it builds the learners' confidence. It actually motivates the learners to continue with the studies, to come back to college. And it also helps learners reflect and say 'Ah wow, that's what I've done — look how well I'm doing!'

View adult learners on ICT courses saying how the Tree of learning helps them review and develop their learning. Their tutor explains how it motivates them and gives them confidence.
