Tree of learning

Video transcript

Tutor:

The tree of learning has been really helpful, especially at the beginning when we try to bring the class together, we use their individual aims, it's like an ice breaker. Everybody could say what they wanted to do, tell me what they wanted out of the course. I could marry up to whereabouts during the course that they would actually learn their specific aim and then as we progressed through we address some of the aims.

When the learners initially develop the leaves or plan their own learning goals and they put them together and they then develop more learning goals because they've looked at the rest of the group, you can then go on to do an individual learning plan for each learner and that can then be used in the RARPA process by the tutor and by the learners to identify exactly where they're up to at every session.

The tree of learning is very flexible and tutors will use it in different ways. Some tutors will use it as a paper based version on a flip chart with post it notes, other tutors have developed electronic trees of learning on Powerpoint with text boxes where they will input their learners' individual learning goals so it's really up to the tutor to learn the tree as they want to use it, it's just a tool to identify those personal learning goals.

In this video clip, Shirley (an ICT manager) and her tutor colleague at Bury College talk about the benefits of the Tree of learning for group learning, social interaction, planning learning and reviewing progress.
