Top tips - some tips for making the most of self-evaluation
- Take time out for reflection - sometimes it helps to jot things down immediately after a session and then consider them further when you have more time.
- Watch yourself (a video can be very useful) - compare what you wanted to happen to what actually did happen. Ask yourself:
- what worked well?
- what didn't work so well?
- why?
- what were the constraints (if any)?; and
- how could I improve for the future?
- Try to put yourself in your learners' shoes - how did they benefit from the session? What did they learn?
- Talk through your sessions with a colleague - they may solve problems, or shed valuable insight which could help you improve further. If they are more experienced than you, they may have encountered problems and worked out how to solve them - saving you a long learning curve!
- Watch colleagues teaching - you will learn from everyone, even new and inexperienced tutors. Everyone brings individual skills and talents to teaching, and because there are so many aspects of it, other people will always have skills or ideas for you to adapt and use.
