The college over the year had got lots of inquiries about what sort of courses students, learners, could go on to learn about selling items on internet auction sites so as part of that continuing development I decided that as part of our Summer School programme we'd have a couple of short classes , four hours, that learners could come on and learn a little bit about how to go about selling online or buying online even.
A structured course that actually teaches somebody what they want to learn like buying and selling online is usually successful because you're actually meeting the needs, you've been asked for that course and you can be shown in your local area to be doing something about something that you've been asked for so it's actually showing that you're responsive to the local community's needs.
The few groups that have ran and completed successfully, what's happened is that people on those courses, because they've never been into college to learn in an adult environment, have actually progressed onto other courses, they've gone onto things like digital imaging, a couple of people have come in and done a clait unit in word processing, that sort of thing, so once you've broken the barrier of getting somebody into college they then see their own personal development needs and have then progressed onto other courses that we offer.
Emma, Community ICT manager and tutor at South Nottingham College, talks about courses on buying and selling online and how successful they have been.
